From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar
The spiritual leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, Olumba Olumba Obu, has cautioned Nigerians against actions that could threaten unity, warning that no individual or group should fan the embers of disunity or perpetrate violence.
The warning was issued during the universal celebration of the 25th anniversary of the organisation, held in Calabar.
Speaking on behalf of the organisation, its spokesperson, Amah Williams, said the message underscored the need for peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups in the country.
He urged Nigerians to embrace unity and brotherhood, stressing that all ethnic nationalities must live together in harmony.
According to him, Nigeria has the potential to become a model for inclusive leadership, good governance and social cohesion if its citizens and leaders commit to justice and fairness.
He also cautioned leaders at all levels to govern with conscience, warning against the misuse of power.
“God does not approve power without conscience. The poor must not be forgotten and the weak must not be trampled upon,” he said.
Williams further stressed that public office should not be used as a tool for intimidation, urging leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens and uphold justice in governance.
On global peace and security, the group maintained that true peace cannot be achieved through military strength or weapons.
“Peace does not come from the size of an army, the pride of a nation, the noise of missiles or the terror of nuclear stockpiles. True peace comes from God,” he said.
The organisation also commiserated with families who have lost loved ones to insecurity and violence in Nigeria, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
It called on leaders in Nigeria to rise to the responsibility of governance with integrity and ensure that justice, peace and inclusiveness remain central to national development.
