From Joseph Asegba, Yola
A former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Aliyu Idi Hong, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Hong announced his resignation in a statement dated February 9, 2026, and made available to journalists in Yola, Adamawa State, describing the move as a personal decision.
“I write to formally tender my resignation from the PDP, Shangui Ward, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State,” the statement read.
He said the decision followed wide consultations with his family, friends and political associates, as well as careful reflection on prevailing circumstances and his future political direction.
“I have resolved to withdraw my membership from the party,” he stated.
The former minister expressed appreciation to the party leadership at the ward, local government and state levels for the support and cooperation extended to him over the years.
“My association with the PDP has been impactful and has contributed meaningfully to my political experience and public engagement. While I take this decision, I acknowledge the role the party has played in my journey,” he added.
Hong, who once served as PDP Secretary in Adamawa State, was actively involved in the 2023 governorship election in the state.
He was in the forefront of the political developments that followed the controversial declaration by a former Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari, who announced the All Progressives Congress candidate, Sen. Aishatu Dahiru Binani, as winner before the process was concluded.
Hong also served as a returning officer for the PDP during the re-election of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for a second term.
