From Mu’awuya Bala Idris, Katsina
The Katsina State Commissioner of Information, Dr. Salisu Bala Zango, has announced government approval for the establishment of a new FM radio station this year.
He disclosed this during the 2026 Pre-Budget Defence held at the Old Government House.
According to Dr. Zango, the proposed FM station will cost the government approximately N366 million and is expected to enhance productivity, coverage, and listener patronage.
“We received approval for the establishment of the new FM station yesterday, and we are in the process of ensuring its take-off within this year,” he said.
The commissioner noted that once the FM station is operational, the targeted revenue of N300 million for the state-owned AM station will be achieved.
He also revealed plans to install solar power at the State Radio station to improve efficiency.
“We are in the process of installing solar panels at the headquarters of the radio station and its substation in Dutsinma to reduce the cost of diesel and address the problem of interrupted power supply from KEDCO,” he said.
Dr. Zango further highlighted the administration of Governor Dikko Umar Radda’s efforts to digitalize state-owned radio and television stations.
He commended the government for directing ministries and parastatals to patronize the stations through adverts and jingles, assuring that all revenue generated would be managed transparently.
Earlier, the General Manager of Katsina State Television, Abba Zayyad, spoke about the neglect of the station by previous administrations, which led to poor performance in revenue generation and audience reach.
He stated that the government is currently working to install modern facilities to restore the station’s dignity.
