From Joseph Asegba, Yola

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food items to orphans and vulnerable households in Adamawa State as part of its humanitarian intervention programme.

The Commission said it is targeting over 150 organisations across the state, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 beneficiaries expected to benefit from the gesture.

Speaking during the distribution exercise in Yola, the state capital, the NEDC Head of Resettlement and Early Recovery, Mr. Lawan Hamidu, said the initiative is part of the Commission’s mandate to support the welfare of people in the North-East region.

He explained that the intervention is a routine exercise designed to cushion the effects of hardship in society.

“This is part of the routine exercise we carry out whenever we notice challenges in society. We set aside some food items to distribute to vulnerable persons and individuals,” he said.

He added that the intervention aligns with the Commission’s mandate of supporting vulnerable groups and promoting social stability.

Mr. Hamidu also called on wealthy individuals and organisations to emulate the NEDC by supporting vulnerable persons, noting that such efforts would promote peace and stability in society.

In his remarks, the NEDC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Mr. Khalifat Lawan, said over 150 organisations have been selected to benefit from the distribution.

He disclosed that the items distributed include rice, spaghetti, and cooking oil.
The state coordinator urged leaders of beneficiary organisations to ensure that the items are fairly distributed to their members.

Also speaking, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Council of Nigeria in Adamawa State, Rev. Victor Saje and Mallam Ismail Modibbo respectively, commended the initiative.

They assured that the items would be distributed to the intended beneficiaries across the 21 local government areas of the state.
