The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced the suspension of lectures and practical classes every Wednesday as part of measures to prepare its student-athletes for the 28th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), scheduled to hold in November 2026.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Offiong Offiong Efanga, disclosed this during a media briefing on Thursday on the university’s level of preparedness to host the prestigious sporting event for the first time since 1990.
Prof. Offiong said the decision was part of proactive steps to ensure that UNICAL does not only host a successful competition but also records an impressive performance at the games.
He noted that more than 50 public and private universities have already expressed interest in participating, while over 50,000 athletes, officials, and supporters are expected to converge on Calabar for the sporting event.
According to him, participating universities will compete in 28 sporting events, adding that UNICAL has integrated NUGA preparations into its academic calendar to provide student-athletes with adequate time for training.
“Our students have been training intensively for the competition. To demonstrate our determination to lead the medals table, we have directed that no lectures or practicals should hold on Wednesdays so that participating students can concentrate fully on their training,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that the university is constructing a modern sports complex as part of the infrastructure development ahead of the games.
He commended the support of the Cross River State Government, describing Governor Bassey Otu as a key partner in the hosting arrangements.
Prof. Offiong said the governor has pledged to provide resources for the event as chief host, while the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and members of the National Assembly from the state have also assured the university of their support.
Expressing confidence in the institution’s readiness, the Vice Chancellor assured athletes, officials, and visitors that UNICAL is committed to delivering a memorable competition that reflects excellence, fair play, and sportsmanship.
“Without any hesitation, we are ready and willing to welcome and host athletes, officials, and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond.
“We are committed to delivering a successful competition that reflects the values of excellence, fair play, and sportsmanship that NUGA represents,” he said.
